Job Description: Past Recovery Archaeological Services Inc. is seeking an experienced and meticulous Archaeological Field Director to join our team for the 2024 field season.  Most of the fieldwork under this contract will be in the Cobourg to Brighton area (Northumberland County), but there is a possibility for some travel to other locations throughout the season.  Candidates with demonstrable report writing skills or certificates in GIS will be considered for a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  1. Direct and oversee Stage 1-4 archaeological assessments and mitigations using field techniques and recording methods suitable for the site type and conditions
    1. The current contract position will primarily involve Stage 1 and 2 archaeological assessments for a linear corridor project.
  2. Ensure all fieldwork complies with the Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists and associated Technical Bulletins issued by the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism
  3. Supervise and mentor a team of archaeological field technicians, delegating tasks and giving opportunities to learn when appropriate.
  4. Ensure quality control of field work and data – including maintaining organized field notes, records and documentation of all activities.
  5. Maintain communication with and provide regular updates to Project Managers and Coordinators.
  6. Assist in the identification, documentation and interpretation of archaeological sites and artifacts.
  7. Proficient with field equipment, such as GPS and digital mapping tools for accurate data collection.
  8. Manage field schedules to ensure successful completion of a project.
  9. Adhere to health and safety regulations and protocols during fieldwork.
  10. Contributing to and authoring archaeological reports.

Qualifications:

  1. Valid Professional or Research Licence issued by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism
  2. Previous experience as an Archaeological Field Director is preferred.
  3. Thorough understanding of MCM reporting requirements and their relevance to archaeological fieldwork.
  4. Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  5. Leadership skills and the ability to motivate a team and maintain morale are essential.
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  7. Physical fitness and endurance for outdoor fieldwork (eg. Hand shoveling, screening soils, walking long distances, lifting up to 40 lbs) in varying weather and conditions.
  8. Valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  9. Willingness to work on projects across the province. This position will require some travel and overnight stays, with accommodations and per diems provided.
  10. Aptitude in GIS and Microsoft suite (Teams, OneNote, Word, Excel, Sharepoint) would be an asset.
  11. Demonstrable archaeological report writing skills would be an asset.

Job Description: Past Recovery Archaeological Services Inc. is seeking motivated and skilled Archaeological Field Technicians to join our team for the 2024 field season. The successful candidates will play a key role in conducting field surveys, excavations and recording archaeological findings. Most of the fieldwork under this contract will be in the Cobourg to Brighton area, but there is a possibility for some travel to other locations throughout the season.

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct archaeological field surveys and excavations under the supervision of the project archaeologist/field director.
  2. Assist in the identification and documentation of archaeological sites.
  3. Utilize field equipment, such as GPS and digital mapping tools for accurate data collection.
  4. Collaborate and communicate with team members.
  5. Follow established field procedures.
  6. Maintain organized field notes, records and documentation when required.
  7. Adhere to health and safety regulations and protocols during fieldwork.
  8. Flexibility to travel and work in different locations within Ontario.

Qualifications:

  1. Completion of or working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or a related field is preferred.
  2. Previous experience as an archaeological field technician is preferred.
  3. Familiarity with the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism (MCM) Standards and Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists.
  4. Strong attention to detail and communication skills.
  5. Ability to work as part of a team, showing respect and kindness to others.
  6. Physical fitness and endurance for outdoor fieldwork (e.g. Hand shoveling, screening soils, walking long distances, lifting up to 40 lbs) in varying weather and conditions.
  7. Valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.
  8. Willingness to work on projects across the province. This position will require some travel and overnight stays, with accommodations and per diems provided.
